Kindergarten Art: Art and Literacy - Eric Carle

Kindergarten students are currently working on artwork inspired by the author/illustrator Eric Carle. In class we've read the books The Very Hungry Caterpillar and 10 Little Rubber Ducks. We've created the artwork below.

Warm-Up: To continue with the elementary art curriculum please read an Eric Carle book to your child or click the link below to hear a read aloud of the book Mister Seahorse.

Art Materials: Please use art materials you have available to you at home including pencils, scissors, glue, paper, crayons, construction paper, markers, paint etc.

Art Activity Options:
1. Draw a picture of your favorite part of the book. Add color with crayons, markers, or paint. If you wish, cut and glue items to your project as well.

2. Draw a picture of what could happen next after the story ends. Add color with crayons, markers, or paint. If you wish, cut and glue items to your project.

Talk About Art: Retell the story to your parent/guardian. Tell them about your artwork and identify all of the art materials you used in this project.

1st Grade: Pets in Art

Recently in 1st Grade art each student made a model magic fish pet and came up with a name, type of fish, and pet care. We painted our pets with tempera paint.

Warm Up: To continue our pet theme art lesson think about another type of pet you would like to have. Maybe a dog, cat, bird, or rabbit.

Art Materials: Please use art materials you have available to you at home including pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, markers, paint, or colored pencils.

Art Activity: Draw a picture of your pet. Add color with markers, paint or crayons. Add details such as pet food and pet toys. If you wish, cut and glue items to add to your work. Please give your pet a name and tell how to take care for the pet.

Talk About Art: Share your pet artwork with a parent/guardian. Would they like to have this pet as well? Review pet care. Identify all of the art materials you used to make this project.

2nd Grade Art: Amusement Park Ride

In 2nd Grade art we talked about the Disney ride It's A Small World and the artist Mary Blair, one of the first women to work for Disney. Each student made an It's a Small World collage.

Warm Up: Discuss rides you have been on at carnivals, boardwalks and amusement parks such as Six Flags, Disney World, Hershey Park, Sesame Place, etc.

Art Materials: Please use art materials you have available to you at home including pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, markers, construction paper, paint, or colored pencils.

Art Activity Options:
 1. Cut strips of paper and draw lines on them to make tracks. Bend, fold, and curl the paper to create different twists and turns on the ride. Glue the strips into place. Draw cars and add them to the ride. Add color with crayons, markers, or paint. Come up with a name for the ride. Give details including how fast the ride goes and if it goes upside down. How tall do you have to be to ride?

2. Draw a ride that you've been on or create a new ride from your imagination. Be sure to come up with a name for the ride. How fast does it go? Is it for children or adults? Color the drawing with crayons or markers.

Talk About Art: Tell your parent/guardian about your ride. Share details about how fast the ride goes. Would they want to go on the ride?
