Spend a day at Grounds for Sculpture.

If you're looking for a fun family activity consider visiting Grounds for Sculpture. Located in Hamilton Township NJ the sculpture garden and museum is home to many beautiful and interactive pieces of art. Some young children may not enjoy the confines of a museum, but Grounds for Sculpture brings art outside. 2nd Grade Lions

2nd Grade students created amazing lions.

We began this lesson by discussing the following lion facts:

Male lions have manes.
Female lions are great hunters.
Lions can weigh up to 400 lbs.
Lions live in the wild in Africa.
A lion's roar can be heard from 5 miles away.

The students drew the lion step-by-step and painted him with multicultural colors. Next, details were added to the lion's face with oil pastels. Finally, an animal print pattern was added to the top and bottom of the paper.

I'm very proud of the students' work. Their lions are very expressive!

Kindergarten Owlets

Kindergarten students created fun owlets!

We began by drawing the owl step-by-step and ripping brown paper to create the owl's feathers. Ripping the paper was a great way to work on fine motor skill development. The students practiced cutting by tracing two cups for the yellow eyes and cutting them out. They added details such as legs, eyes, and a beak to complete the baby owl. The lesson culminated with adding movement to art by acting out all of the owlet's body parts.

1st Grade Mixing Colors

1st Grade students are learning a lot about COLOR!

Art Vocabulary:
Primary Colors
Secondary Colors
The Color Wheel

By combining Art, Music, and Science students are learning to make the secondary colors.  We began by completing a science experiment. Using food coloring the students loved mixing 2 primary colors to create a secondary color. They were great scientists! They also enjoyed listening to our Color CD and singing along to some of the songs. We completed a color mixing activity sheet together.

For a follow-up lesson the students created a Color Bug. Each bug is a visual reminder of how to make a secondary color. The body of the bug is a secondary color and the wings are the 2 primary colors needed to create that color.

The students loved the food coloring experiment.

yellow + blue = green

yellow + red = orange

blue + red = purple

"CAN DO" Artists

On the first day of Art at Young School each student was reminded that they are "CAN DO" Artists!

They can draw, paint, and create!

Each student decorated the word "CAN". They experimented with crayons and markers and enjoyed gluing as well. Believing that they "CAN DO IT" is the first step to creating wonderful artwork.
