Online Art Lessons Week 9

Welcome to Art Class at B. Bernice Young School.
Virtual Learning Week 9

Young School Distance Learning Artists are Soaring to Success!

This collaborative and interactive art project was created in past years to celebrate Young School students being respectful, kind, and safe throughout the school year. Each student decorated a feather for the display. It is inspired by street artist Kelsey Montague.

Please scroll down to find your grade level art project to complete for art class this week. You are welcome to modify  the lesson with art materials you have available at home. Have fun! I can't wait to see your artwork!

When you complete your art project please email me a photo of your artwork and include your child's name and classroom teacher's name.

If you have any questions or concerns please email Mr. Giannetto.

Please follow me on Facebook: Young School Art with Mr. Giannetto

Kindergarten Art - Hermit Crab

A hermit crab is a crustacean.

Hermit crabs carry their home around with them. Yikes! Can you imagine having to carry your house around with you?

They use other animals' shells for a home and as a result are nicknamed "robber crabs."

A hermit crab has ten legs.
Books about Hermit Crabs

Materials: construction paper, scissors, glue, crayons, markers

Step 1: Trace your hand and cut it out. This will be the body of the hermit crab.

Step 2: Trace a small paper plate and cut it out. This will be the shell. Add a spiral inside of the circle. Use the scrap paper to make two big eyes for the hermit crab.

Step 3: Cut tan squares and glue them to the bottom of blue paper to represent sand. Add waves with crayons and markers or paint bubbles using a paper tube.
Step 4: Glue the hermit crab’s body (red handprint) to the sand. Glue the shell (white circle) and make sure to overlap a bit over the wrist of the hand cutout in order for it to look like the crab is coming out of the shell.

Step 5: Add details including seaweed, coral, shells etc.

2nd Grade Art - Butterfly

Vocabulary words for this lesson:
Symmetrical: The same on both sides.
Mosaic: Arranging small pieces to form a picture.

Materials: construction paper, scissors, glue

Step 1: Cut out a variety of circle shapes. You can trace small lids and cups to make the circles. Layer the paper when you’re cutting so you can cut out more than one circle at a time. Draw a body for the butterfly.

Step 2: Cut body into strips and glue to the center of your paper. Space out the pieces as you are gluing.

Step 3: Begin to glue the wings to the butterfly by gluing down the circles. Make sure you glue the same on both sides so your butterfly is symmetrical.

Step 4: Add antennae.
Step 5: Cut small triangles and glue them to the background. Space them out as you’re gluing so that they are separated from one another and form a mosaic.

Talk About Art
Is your butterfly symmetrical?
What shapes are repeated the most in your project?
Can you name other things that are symmetrical?
