2nd Grade:Under the Sea

 Mosaic Art and Paper Sculpture

Second grade students are currently hard at work on an Under the Sea themed cut paper project. 

This project combines both mosaic and paper sculpture techniques with additional 2-D and 3-D elements. 

 The above students are carefully cutting out shapes and gluing them down to create a fish. 

Some parts of the fish are glued flat to the white paper to create a mosaic.

Other pieces of paper are folded or curled with a pencil. This type of paper manipulation causes the fish to pop off the paper and create a fun 3-D element.

To create movement and volume the green paper strips are folded to form seaweed.

 The students have started gluing the blue triangles to create water. This lengthy process is similar to putting a puzzle together. 

I'm very impressed with the finished pieces!

Book Fair Art Display

Young School Celebrates Art & Literacy at the Under the Sea Evening Book Fair.

 Over 100 artists displayed artwork during the Under the Sea Evening Book Fair. 

Students and families enjoyed making an ocean themed bookmark, playing games in the gym, and sampling snacks provided by the YSFA.

Congratulations to all of the artists who had artwork on display! 

Kindergarten Butterflies

Happy Mother's Day from the Art Room! 

Each Kindergarten student created a beautiful clay butterfly for his or her Mom for Mother's Day.

The students loved to use the Crayola Model Magic Clay! 

First, they rolled one long coil and made four balls of clay.

Next, the four balls were connected to the coil to create the body and wings of the butterfly.

Then, they carefully painted the butterfly with tempera paint.

Finally, they painted spots with a Q-Tip.

I'm sure Mom will treasure this special gift for years to come!

First, each child drew a circle and a triangle. The circle will be the chick's head and the triangle will be his body. 

Next, they enjoyed painting the shapes yellow with a sponge brush.

The shapes were then cut out and shells were created. 

   Finally, details were added such as eyes, a beak, feathers, rain, and grass.

First, the students used Crayola Model Magic clay to form a sea creature.

Next, they painted the water and glued down paper towels to represent the sand.

    

They painted their sea creature and made sure to make realistic color choices.

They enjoyed adding details such as coral, seaweed, and a starfish.

The finished mixed media artwork is FANTASTIC! 

It's great to see the diversity of sea-life!

1st Grade: Hermit Crab

A House For Hermit Crab 

Art & Literacy

First, we rolled the clay out to form a coil.

Next, we created a spiral shape to represent the hermit crab's shell.

Then, each student drew, traced, and colored their hermit crab. 

Each hermit crab is displayed on a piece of sandpaper to represent the beach. The students had fun adding shells and a starfish.

They cut out each piece and carefully glued it into place.

Finally, they added details such as eyes and tusks.
